Man charged with assault after fight in Breightmet

A MAN has been charged following a late night assault which left another man needing treatment at hospital.

Police were called to Monks Lane in Breightmet late on Saturday night to reports of a disturbance taking place.

Officers attended and found three men having a fight.

One suffered multiple injuries, including to his back, shoulder and arms and was taken to hospital.

He has since been discharged.

One man, 28-year-old Matthew Williams, has since been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, common assault and affray.

Two men, aged 36 and 29, have been released on bail pending further inquiries, police said.

A local councillor believes the fight took place due to a Saturday night house party that went wrong. He has vowed to tackle the issue for residents.

Cllr Mudasir Dean said many residents contacted him at the time of the incident, saying they are "at breaking point", and looking to move out of the area.

He said: “This is at least the third incident of this type in the past 18 months with armed police turning up trying to diffuse situations.

“There have been multiple stabbings and residents are just so scared and want to get out of the area now.

“I’ve spoken to many families who have said they are building up savings so they can move out of the area as they are just so uncomfortable, especially families with young children.

“I am meeting residents to see what we can do to tackle these problems. Something needs to be done.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Monks Lane, to a report of a disturbance and three males fighting.

“One man, Matthew Williams, was charged with possession of an offensive weapon, common assault and affray."

Emergency services attended and located one male with injuries to his back, shoulder and arms. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been discharged.

“Inquiries are ongoing to ascertain how he sustained the injuries.

"Two men, aged 36 and 29, have been released on bail pending further enquiries.”
