Taliban captures Mazar-i-Sharif last major government stronghold in Afghanistans north

The Taliban militants have seized the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, according to local officials. The fourth-largest city of the country was the last major location in Afghanistan’s north under government control.

Reports suggest the city abruptly fell on Saturday, with local authorities and some of the troops fleeing Mazar-i-Sharif for neighboring Uzbekistan. While the city â€" the capital of the Balkh province â€" was widely regarded as a major government stronghold, its was captured largely without fighting, according to local officials.

“The Taliban have taken control of Mazar-I-Sharif,” Afzal Hadid, head of the Balkh provincial council told Reuters. “All security forces have left Mazar city.”
