Positive signs for NRL grand final as Queensland COVID-19 numbers remain low

The NRL has edged closer to a Suncorp Stadium grand final on Sunday after another day of encouraging COVID-19 numbers in Queensland, with just two new locally acquired cases detected as the state tries to control a small outbreak.

With uncertainty hovering around the event and suggestions it could be either postponed or moved, all eyes were on the update at 10am on Saturday. That proved to be good news with two local cases linked to a known cluster detected in home quarantine and another two in hotel quarantine.

The two new cases are the children of a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Coaches and players were quizzed on Friday about how they would react to the match being moved or postponed at the final moment. Barring a huge spike in overnight numbers, that doesn’t appear to be the case with the clash all but certain to be played in front of a 75 per cent capacity crowd at the famous cauldron.

Queensland health minister Yvette D’Ath said a day was a “long time in COVID”, but there were positive signs the grand final should go ahead in front of a healthy crowd On what is forecast to be a hot and fine day in Brisbane on Sunday.
